Playroom Makeover - a "Boy Cave"

My Home, Miles, Kids' Rooms, Design ProjectsSara Michelle B.Comment

So, this room has had a LOT of makeovers over the years! (You can see photos of the progression of the space here!) However, we are ready to undergo yet another one to make it more suited to being a playroom for the little guys. In fact, we have been referring to it as the "boy cave!"

I've actually always felt a little lost about what to do with this space and how to decorate it, but now that we have a true purpose for it, my vision is finally coming together!

In terms of what the makeover actually entails, we are planning the following:

  1. POTENTIALLY moving the leather couch to this room... We moved it here on a whim over the weekend and we love it! (However, now that living room is empty.. hmm... that is another post!)
  2. Getting rid of the brown paint (it does not mesh well with leather sofa.. It makes the sofa look red, which I hate!) We will be repainting the room Benjamin Moore's Polo Blue. One of my all time favorite colors! You can see in the pictures I have already painted a huge swatch on the wall above the couch.
  3. Replacing the curtains. I like the West Elm ones that are in there, but they are too feminine for the boy cave.  I am thinking I will go with these ones from Restoration Hardware Baby and Child. I already have a pillow in this fabric (see the picture below!) and I love, love, love it! (Anyone interested in buying the old West Elm ones off me? $25/panel for 6-panels!

For not a lot of work and not lot a big investment, we can really transform this room to make it more suitable for the role it plays.

Overall I want to have it have a similar feeling to Miles' big boy room, pictured below. I love repetition in colors and patterns through the house, and having elements that tie everything together.

Big Boy Room Progress!

it is definitely not done yet, but I'm so excited about the progress on Miles' big boy room! It has come a really long way in just a month! So far, we have:

- Painted the room Benjamin Moore's Polo Blue (my favorite navy!)
- Added two twin beds, courtesy of my in-laws
- Installed new drapes from Homegoods - $16 for a packet of two... can't beat that!
- Got new navy cotton jersey sheets from Pottery Barn Kids
- Got new bedskirts from RH Baby & Child
- Got new pillows from RH Baby & Child (here and here)
- Got new duvet covers from RH Baby & Child (not pictured, on backorder until October! Boo!)
- I also framed some really cool patent prints I found at this cute little shop in Powell, Touched. Frames are from Target, the Threshold brand.

The airplane print we had in Miles' nursery but it is from RH Baby & Child.  The dresser is one my parents have had forever. It is a  beast, it holds so much. I love it! I debated painting it but decided it to leave it as is, for now. The desk is also one I've had since I was a kid. I think I need new hardware on it because this is kind of feminine, but at the same time I am kind of liking the white on white...

Also, in case anyone is wondering, the fan is from Restoration Hardware (probably 7 years old) and the diaper pail is Ubbi (Best diaper pail EVER! Uses regular trash bags = priceless!)

The banner with Miles' name on it is also something we had in his nursery. It is from Land of Nod.

The lights (which I LOVE!) are ones we have forever from Pottery Barn. They actually still carry them, here. I think they are perfect for this room!

The other blankets and bedding are ones we have around the house forever.. Just using them in here temporarily until the new duvet covers come in.

What's still left to do? We need a rug, headboards, and we want to install a book nook in the corner so Miles can have his own little library. This kid loves reading!

I love this room! I hope it inspires sweet dreams and big dreams for Miles as he grows!

PS - Sorry about the terrible quality photos! This room has an interesting balance going between the dark walls and all the natural light, and my C- photography skills just can't capture it very well!
